Beginning Jan. 1, 2009, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (including vans, pickups or panel trucks) is:

  • 55 cents per mile for business miles driven;
  • 24 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes; and
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

The new rate for business miles compares to a rate of 50.5 cents per mile for 2008. The new rate for medical and moving purposes compares to 19 cents in 2008. The rate for miles driven in service of charitable organizations has remained the same.

Newsflash

The definition of "rich" may be going up should lawmakers choose to impose extra taxes on the wealthy to pay for health reform. Three committees writing the lead House bill have called for an additional tax to be imposed on income above $280,000 for singles and $350,000 for married couples. The so-called surtax would run as high as 5.4% on income over $1 million.
